Rev. Tom Atkins:  2017 Evangelist

Tom Atkins has the distinction of being the Lead Pastor at the Gateway United Methodist Church in Athens, Georgia, as well as a General Evangelist from the North Georgia Conference.  He represents a new generation of evangelists by seeking to bring the timeless truths and experiences of the Gospel to our contemporary culture. He is the founder of Tom Atkins Evangelistic Association.  

After many years of struggling with a call into full time evangelism, Tom was appointed as a General Evangelist from the North Georgia conference in 1994.  He pastored United Methodist churches in North Georgia for 23 years before being appointed as a General Evangelist.  Since then, he has preached in 30 annual conferences in the United States.

Rev. Atkins is a graduate of Asbury (College) University and Asbury Theological Seminary, both in Wilmore, Kentucky. He was the recepient of the Phillip Award for Outstanding Evangelism from the National Association of United Methodist Evangelists.  He has been the past president of the National Association of United Methodist Evangelists.

He is married to Susan.  They have two sons and numerous grandchildren.  He enjoys hunting, fly fishing and beekeeping.  The Atkins live in Lavonia, Georgia.


 

Dr. Gary Allen Henecke:  2017 Evangelist

We welcome Dr. Henecke to his first speaking engagement at Indian Springs!

Dr. Henecke has served the Church of our Lord since he was called to preach at the age of sixteen. He has been a preacher for 50 years of the Church of the Nazarene's 100-year history.

During his career, he held four pastorates including these historic churches:  First Church of Oskaloosa, Iowa; First Church of Portland, Oregon; and First Church of Nashville, Tennessee (known as the "Mother Church of the South").

He is an Alumnus of State University of Iowa; Olivet Nazarene University; and George Fox University/Western Evangelical Seminary.  His degrees include a B.A. in Ancient History/Bible; M.A. in Exegetical Biblical Theology and a Doctor of Divinity in Biblical Theology.

Dr. Henecke served the Nazarene denomination as the Executive Director of the Youth Department for five years in the 1970s.  Upon retirement, his district described him as "a minister of the twenty-first century whose soul lives in the first century", referring to his devotion to the life of Jesus and His presence in our life.

He retired from full-time pastoral ministry in July 2011.  He is presently an Elder in Christ through the Church of the Nazarene and serves as a Trustee to Olivet Nazarene University.  However, he still enjoys preaching when the opportunity comes.  He and his wife, Jean, live in Franklin, Tennessee.


Rev. George Mathison:  2017 Evangelist

Before retiring in 2016, Dr. George Mathison served as senior minister of Auburn United Methodist Church for 26 years, a church with 4,500 members.  Other pastorates were also in Alabama.  In retirement, Dr. Mathison is maintaining a full schedule preaching in revivals, campmeetings and preaching missions.  His passion is to preach the gospel of God's saving and sanctifying grace.

Dr. Mathison did his undergratuate work at Young Harris Junior College, received his bachelor's degree from Huntingdon College and his master of divinity from Emory University. His doctorate was received through Sewanee-Vanderbilt Joint Doctor of Ministy Coalition.  After his doctorate, he was appointed and studied as a research fellow at Yale University in Biblical Homiletics and Greek.

Dr. Mathison is the author of eight book titles:

Dr. Mathison reads extensively in the area of American history.  He is an outstanding tennis player, winning many state championships.  The Alabama Tennis Association also named him their Sportsman of the Year.  Dr. Mathison served as team chaplain for the Auburn University football team for 10 years and has been closely involved with the basketball team.  He also serviced as chaplain to the Auburn Public Safety Deparment, meeting regularly with the Auburn Fire and Police Departments.

He and his wife, Monteigne, have one married daughter and twin grandsons.


 

Rev. Stan Key:  Bible Study Teacher 2017

IS Portrait Key Cropped BWWe welcome Rev. Stan Key for his first speaking engagement at Indian Springs this summer. Rev. Key will be our 2017 Bible Study Teacher.  He is the current president of The Francis Asbury Society (FAS) in Wilmore, Kentucky.  

Joining the FAS team in 2014, Stan has contributed to the ministry of the Society through preaching, teaching and writing.  Stan and his wife, Katy, came to FAS after ten years of missionary service in Paris, France, and 18 years of pastoral leadership at Loudonville Community Church in Albany, New York.

Stan was raised in Georgia, the son of a United Methodist minister.  He earned a B.A. degree from Asbury (College) University, a M. Div from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Th.M. in Missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He completed additional graduate work at Asbury Theological Seminary in the E. Stanley Jones School of World Missions and Evangelism and at the Faculte Libre de Theologie Evangelique in Vaux-sur-Seine, France.

Stan also has traveled overseas in numerous capacities:  missionary retreats, pastor conferences and missionary conferences. In the United States, he has spoken in missions conferences, camp meetings and revivals.

Stan and his wife, Katy, live in Wilmore, Kentucky.  They have three daughters and four grandchildren.
